Show Time-Click here for pictures

David Byrne presented an interesting show at Carnegie hall on Friday. It was a collection bands that would not usually be heard in a place like Carnegie hall. Even some of the bands said to the audience " what I'm I doing hear". When vetiver took the stage they commented that the balcony's at the Watt club Were much smaller. All of the musicians did their best to put on an outstanding show.
CocoRosie was the first to take the stage. They played some selections from their upcoming release "The adventures of ghost horse and stillborn". They were the only band to use the film projector. The projector combined with the songs they played had a Trip-like Pink Floyd feel. Some songs seemed sloppy. Their music is complex and the acoustics of Carnegie hall did not hide any of the miscues or notes that didn't blend.
Next on stage was Adem. Adem is now fronting his own four piece band with domino records. The music was well written and well performed but didn't carry well in a hall this size. The bands shared members all night long. Adem was on stage most of the night on various instruments.
Vashti Bunyan is a cult favorite. When she took the stage the crowd applauded loudly. She opened up with a never before played song. The rest of her set was well received by the audience.
Vetiver's set was solid. Vetiver's singer/songwriter Andy Cabic put on a good show. The music of vetiver was more upbeat than that of Adem or Vashti Bunyan. This helped to lift the audience. Again they were well received by this Carnegie hall crowd.
To close the show was Devendra Banhart. This was by far the best band to take stage this night. They had the audience screaming for more. Their selections electrified the audience. David Byrne came and closed the show with all the band members. As I was leaving I heard people remark that they couldn't believe these bands played Carnegie hall. Overall everyone enjoyed the night.
The show was slated to run for 75 minutes. It ran much longer. I think in the end this hurt the bands. I am sure their were some who felt the concert drag on. The music was mellow and the bands are very underground.I applaud David Byrne for bringing these bands to Carnegie hall. This helped to open up many peoples ears to a sound they perhaps had never heard. -C
